This one had been kept pretty quiet. From July onwards if you're producing 2,500L or less of fuel you now don't have to pay fuel duty. The HMRC website confirms this:

In effect, if you can source your own spent cooking oil, refine it and use it you've got pretty much free fuel. Of course you need a car that will take SVO / Bio but this is still a big step forward in terms enticing people over to using alternative renewable fuels.

I wonder if this adjustment to the taxation law also covers purchasing SVO (straight vegetable oil) from supermarkets - although at nearly 6.3p per litre it's still not that cheap if buying in bulk. The price of off the shelf SVO has risen over the past two years by nearly 50% as demand has surely grown. Maybe everyone just likes cooking chips at home these days.....
